Setting: You're on a camping trip with your family in The Middle of Nowhere. The grass is green, the sky is blue, and your leg is red (poison ivy rash—you're wearing shorts). Situation: Your wife is dealing with the crying baby. Your 8-year-old and 12-year-old are fighting again. And the teenage son of the jackass who parked his RV in the adjacent lot is blasting ear-piercing metal "music" because he's mad at his parents. You decide its time to watch the new Doctor Who episodes you just bought

Family camping hack: Choosing the best campsite with kids
Here's Sarah's practical advice about choosing a campsite when you've got little ones along: We just got back from camping with our 3 year-old twins. It was a lot of fun, but could have been better if we'd just had better criteria for choosing a site. So here are the two criteria I'll use next time: 1) Find a site that's as close to the nicest bathrooms that the campground has. In our pre-kid days, I always wanted to be far away from the bathroom and away from any RV campers. But we quickly

Call of the Wild - July 7 - Galbraith - Toolik Lake
Note: the story begins here: http://1-800-magic.blogspot.com/2008/07/call-of-wild.html It’s Monday and we wake up really tardy – not surprising for us, given the time we went to bed, but the kids are definitely sleeping in. It must be around noon before we have “breakfast” and move out for a hike. A few words about food. The RV is really made for cooking. There is a pretty big refrigerator with a freezer compartment. We had two cans of ice cream in it at the beginning of the trip and now we’re

Notes on Camp(ing)
The other week, I went camping for the first time in about a hundred years. I have a penchant for exaggeration, but it’s seriously been a long time. My family used to horde together for an annual camping trip back when everyone wasn’t so old and sleepy. I think the farthest we went was Montana, but even then, our idea of camping wasn’t terribly authentic. I’d put it more in line with “forest bulldozing with cars” than surrounding oneself with nature. Our uncle had an RV, the penultimate fuck y

bucket lists right now. I have not seen the movie The pail List. The title issues from things you want to do in your life before you “kick the pail.” I’d prefer calling it a Daisy List because I like daisies better than buckets, but I was not consulted in this matter. I am consulting with you though on what sorts of things are on your pail lists. I’m interested in the whys as much as the whats. Here are some of mine: 1) I want to serve as an American Red Cross volunteer with a food va

Camping Offers a Lo-Cost Way to Enjoy a Weekend Getaway
Knowing how much I like camping now in my adult life, I look back on my childhood and realize just how fortunate I was to have a dad who loved to go camping. The outdoors and camping in particular, helps bring you closer to nature and the serenity of life that you just can not receive anywhere else, through any other vacation. Camping is a great way for childhood sons and daughters to
